In 2003 after 16 years of working in the demolition industry, Matthew Lovell decided it was time to try creating lasting objects instead of open spaces.
Matthew’s products range from boxes to bowls, platters to candlesticks and in a variety of woods, from the exotic to things made out of donated tree trunks and wood destined for the fire. “I’ve already had a few commissions, including a box to keep keys in and a fireside box for long matches – it’s all new to me – but an exciting process of discovery”.
WELLS WEEK 2004

After 8 months of production, June 19th 2004 arrived and Christmas Cottage's front door was opened to allow entry to the 1st exhibition. Visitors to the wells stopped off on their journey through the village and over the next week, I was extremely pleased to have 60% of the exhibits find their way to new homes. Such was the interest in certain woods and items that I found myself in the workshop every evening to keep up with demand. It was a major confidence boost and I returned to production the following Monday with new enthusiasm only to have the lathe's drive belt snapping after the first bowl. Fortunately my spirits didn't dampen for more than a day - thanks to Craft Supplies prompt rescue. We will definitely repeat this next year.
